E-Bike Hire is a new-ish invention from Sillycon Valley which is designed to improve the reputation of all cyclists by providing the joy of bicycle use to the general public.

These users, unfamiliar with the usual requirements of being a cyclist, are much more pleasant to be around and aren't wearing an obnoxious amount of lycra as they know they can go fast enough with the provided electric motor.

Due to the fact that these fleets of cycles are often not excellently maintained, it has been noted that often cyclists using these schemes will fail to stop at red lights, but this is not their fault so it would be unreasonable to be annoyed as an every day road user by this.

Usage

These cycles can often be hired via a reliable mobile app which improves the convenience and adoption of these schemes. Just see the below review from an elated customer:

While trying this service via a free ride, I could not find a parking space remotely near my destination, and so I had to go over the free time limit and park the bike way out of the way, which meant that it wasn't a very convenient experience for me and I was unexpectedly charged. Had to go through about 6 red lights just to save a couple quid too!

Criticisms

Some people say that charging by the minute for bike hire inspires reckless behaviour in order to save money, but these people are wrong[1].

As these apps allow better behaving cyclists onto the road, car drivers report concerns [2] that they will no longer be able to hurl abuse at all cyclists as nonchalantly as they once did.
